Zella Casey Brown is a multidisciplinary artist based in Sydney on Kuringgai and Gadigal Land, who works across the fields of print, photography, drawing, and sculpture. Having just finished a master’s degree at the National Art School in Sydney, Zella has developed a performative monotype printing method which reflects the paramount connection between body, mind, and material. She views the practice as a dialogue of cyclical action and gesture, working interchangeably to unearth abstract disclosures of sensory experience in collaboration with the mechanical body. For Zella, a shosin approach — the Zen Buddhist term for a ‘beginner’s mind’ is central, as opposed to the pursuit of mastery. As a way of being, shoshin creates a discourse of forgetting and remembering, between tacit knowledge of the body and explicit knowledge of the mind.
The series titled ‘Villa Alba’ represents a new direction of movement for Zella, developed at the end of her Masters degree. The prints reflect a current focus in her practice of embracing and challenging the limitations of the body and material capacity to work together. In doing so, the scale of the work holds a strong sense of agency in relation to the viewer. Villa Alba provides a quiet space to encounter the dynamic relationships that lay within and between each work.
